GEO: how to get ChatGPT and Google AI to recommend your business

Until recently, someone looking for “a web designer for a small business” opened Google and scanned ten blue links. Today, more and more people simply ask a chatbot – and get one summarised answer with a few recommendations. The new question is: is your business inside that answer?

What is GEO?

GEO – Generative Engine Optimization – is about appearing in the answers of generative engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, and the AI overviews at the top of Google results. It’s sometimes called AEO or AIO.

It doesn’t replace SEO – it builds on it: AI engines rely heavily on the same index of pages, and they favour sources that are already high-quality, fast and clear. The difference is how they “read” content – they look for answers they can quote.

Why does it matter for a small business?

  • The answer is the decision: when a chatbot recommends three businesses, the client usually stops searching.
  • A less crowded field: most small businesses haven’t adapted their sites yet – an opportunity to get ahead.
  • Built-in trust: being mentioned in an AI answer feels to the client like a neutral recommendation.

Eight practical steps

1. Answer the questions clients actually ask

Collect the questions you hear on the phone and on WhatsApp, and answer them on your website. Open each answer with one direct sentence, then expand. That is exactly the format AI engines like to quote. A good FAQ page is one of the strongest tools here.

2. Be factual and specific

“Excellent, professional service” tells a machine nothing. “Builds business websites and landing pages for companies in Israel, designed in line with IS 5568 accessibility guidelines” is information that can be understood, categorised and quoted.

3. Keep your information consistent everywhere

Your business name, phone number, field and service area should appear exactly the same on your site, your Google Business Profile, social networks and directories. Contradictions confuse people and machines alike.

4. Add structured data (Schema)

Structured data in JSON-LD tells engines, in their own language, who you are: a business of a certain type, with services, a service area, FAQs, articles and an author. It’s invisible to visitors – and very clear to crawlers.

5. Make sure crawlers can reach your content

A site whose content only loads after running heavy JavaScript, or one that accidentally blocks AI crawlers, simply won’t be read. Check your robots.txt and keep the important text in the HTML itself.

6. Write content with depth

Articles that explain a topic fully – with examples, comparison tables and practical steps – get quoted far more than generic ones. One good article a month beats ten mediocre ones.

7. Show who’s behind the business

A real About page, a full name, experience, examples of work and client reviews all strengthen what Google calls E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness.

8. Earn mentions outside your website

AI engines also learn about your business from other sources: Google reviews, articles, interviews, podcasts, partnerships and professional forums. Every trustworthy mention strengthens the picture.

How do you know it’s working?

Ask the chatbots yourself – in several phrasings, the way a client would. Track traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sources in your analytics. And above all: ask new clients how they found you.

The bottom line

GEO isn’t magic or a shortcut – it’s the natural continuation of a good website: clear, fast, accessible, with content that answers real questions and structured data. This website, for example, is built on exactly these principles. Want a website that’s ready for both Google and the AI era? Let’s talk.
